Gunnar Hansen is not just a pretty face who starred as the original Leatherface in the 1974 film Texas Chain Saw Massacre. These are the films whose effect, and mastery of that effect are undeniable. There are certain horror films whose position in the pantheon of the genre are as solid as the stone pedestals we horror fans place them on. After devouring it in three sittings, I can say I was not disappointed. Here's to Gunnar!Īs a longtime horror movie fan, this is one of those books that I never thought to ask for, but when they announced its publication, I could hardly wait for it to come out. He was a great guy, and a darn good author to boot. Sadly, Gunnar passed away almost exactly two years after this event, on November 7, 2015. Signed by Gunnar Hansen during the Coast City Comicon in early November 2013. Hardcover edition (first edition/first printing).

The Vintner’s Luck spans the adult lifetime of one Sobran Jodeau, who in the year 1808 decides to drown his romantic sorrows in wine – his father, and therefore in time he, owns a vineyard – and instead falls into the arms of an angel. The few people whom I buzzed who had heard of Knox usually talked about The Vinter’s Luck, and I picked it up myself because my local library is on a “Gay Abandon” kick, and places “Gay Abandon” stickers on books with homoerotic themes in an effort, I daresay, to remind us all that Gay Sex Is Fun! We have enough trouble making sure people understand Our Fake Pointy Ears are Elven and not Vulcan. And We hear they make big-ass movies in the small ponds – We don’t want to look uber-geeky or anything. We don’t want to talk about the Small Ponds, do we, they’re kinda, you know, small. Elizabeth Knox, on minimal research, is far more famous than I had supposed her to be – I’m finding there’s lots of these Big Fish in Small Ponds sort of writers whom I never hear about but once I read them it turns out every one has read them already, but is just, I don’t know, just very shy. 5/19/2023 0 Comments Dream Lover by Nico JayeLyrically, the song pictures a protagonist calling for a perfect lover, her "dreamlover," to whisk her away into the night and not "disillusion" her like others in the past. This was partly in light of the mixed reception to her previous studio effort Emotions (1991), which featured gospel and 1960s soul influences. "Dreamlover" marked a more pronounced attempt on Carey's part to incorporate hip hop into her music, as was seen in her decision to work with Hall, who had previously produced What's the 411? (1992) by Mary J. The song incorporates a sample of the hook from "Blind Alley" by the Emotions-previously used in " Ain't No Half-Steppin'" (1988) by Big Daddy Kane-into its melody and instrumentation. Its lyrics were written by Carey, with music composed by Carey and Dave Hall, and was produced by Carey, Walter Afanasieff and Hall. " Dreamlover" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter and record producer Mariah Carey, released on July 27, 1993, as the lead single from her third studio album, Music Box (1993). Is it vitally important that every little stitch of a narrative holds tight, or can you handle a little wobble in your plots? So with that in mind, and before we decide (together, just you and me) whether or not Blake Crouch's new book Dark Matter is worth adding to your list, we have to clear a few things up. There are important books and acclaimed books and books you can put down like junk food - like sitting on the couch in your underwear and eating that whole bag of barbecue potato chips because there's no one there to tell you not to. There are roughly a billion books published every year and you've only got time to read a few of them. Your purchase helps support NPR programming. Close overlay Buy Featured Book Title Dark Matter Author Blake Crouch Helprin doesn’t forget that he has a tale to get on with, and he has a knack for choosing just the right tantalizing detail to make readers wonder what will happen next. He published “Freddy and Fredericka” in 2005. 6 Calendar section, a review of “In Sunlight and in Shadow” said that it was Mark Helprin’s first novel in 17 years. But just when you think “In Sunlight and in Shadow” might float away into the ether, lofted by the sheer beauty of his sentences, he brings it down to earth with a shrewd comment on the speech patterns of Catherine’s ultra-privileged social class, or a vividly specific account of the production process at the West 26th Street loft that houses Harry’s high-end leather goods business. Post-World War II Manhattan isn’t merely the backdrop for their love affair it’s a magical urban landscape of “whitening sunrises … ferries that glide across the harbor trailing smoke … bridges diamond-lit and distant.”Įven when Helprin first won acclaim three decades ago for such early works as “Ellis Island and Other Stories” and the novel “Winter’s Tale,” his penchant for providing an epiphany on nearly every page could become wearying. Indeed, prose seems too mundane a term for Helprin’s extravagant way with words and emotions as he chronicles the courtship and marriage of Army veteran Harry Copeland and heiress/actress Catherine Thomas Hale. It’s been 17 years since Mark Helprin’s last novel, “Memoir from Antproof Case,” and he’s lost none of his gift for bravura storytelling and lavish prose. |
